Basics not in the stores, but online!
Black computer socks have been my basics for decades - cotton in summer, wool in winter. I went to four department stores (from DJs to Big W) and all they had, a best, were beige cotton. It was a relief to find them online, so I can now use my old worn and nearly holey ones as clearning rags ...

Computer socks are the best comfort wearing
My husband will not wear any other brand of sock and after 20 odd years has only worn these. For comfort, warmth, absorbant, stay up, and wear so well.

My favorite wool socks
Yep, I'm a girl, but I love these socks - I keep going back for these - wool that doesn't itch, for the quality that lasts and lasts, and yes, they do stay up! Perfect for work socks, or even for those cold Sunday mornings when you want some cuddly warm socks.
